Selection of Fire Hose Liners and Applicable Liquids


The liner is the core functional component of a fire hose, directly determining its service life, transmission efficiency, and safety in different fire scenarios. Proper selection of liner materials based on applicable liquids and working environments is essential to ensure stable firefighting performance and avoid premature hose damage or safety hazards.
Three liner materials are widely adopted in modern fire hoses: PVC, polyurethane (PU), and synthetic rubber including EPDM and nitrile rubber (NBR). Each material has unique properties and matches different firefighting liquids and working conditions.
PVC-lined fire hoses are the most cost-effective and lightweight option. Featuring good waterproof performance and basic pressure resistance, they are mainly applicable to conventional clean water, the most common firefighting medium for residential buildings, commercial facilities, and daily emergency fire control. However, PVC liners tend to harden in extreme temperatures and lack strong chemical resistance, so they are only suitable for pure water transmission and cannot cope with corrosive or oil-containing liquids.
PU (polyurethane) liners have become a mainstream high-performance choice for professional firefighting. With excellent flexibility, low-temperature resistance, and high abrasion strength, PU liners maintain stable performance from -40°C to 80°C. They adapt to clean water and common aqueous fire-extinguishing foams, making them ideal for high-rise buildings and mobile firefighting operations. Their smooth inner surface reduces fluid friction, improving liquid transmission efficiency, while their lightweight design eases firefighters’ operational burden.
Rubber liners serve harsh and specialized firefighting scenarios. EPDM rubber boasts outstanding weather and aging resistance, suitable for long-term outdoor water delivery and conventional fire water. Nitrile rubber (NBR) stands out for its superior oil and chemical resistance, specifically applicable to oil-contaminated water and partial non-corrosive industrial liquid fire suppression in oil fields, chemical plants, and docks. It effectively resists erosion from fuel and mineral oil, avoiding liner swelling or cracking.
In conclusion, liner selection must prioritize the transmission liquid type. PVC suits conventional clean water for civilian use; PU matches water and foam for versatile professional firefighting; rubber liners cater to oil-containing and harsh-condition liquids. Scientific material matching guarantees reliable firefighting efficiency and prolonged hose service life.
