Temperature-based Selection and Standard Usage of Fire Blankets

As simple yet vital fire safety devices, fire blankets extinguish initial small fires by cutting off oxygen supply. Unlike fire extinguishers, they require no complex operation or chemical agents, making them ideal for household and industrial emergency use. To ensure reliable fire suppression and personal safety, it is essential to select suitable fire blankets based on fire temperatures and follow standardized operating procedures.
Fire blankets are categorized by heat-resistant materials with distinct temperature tolerance ranges for different fire scenarios. Ordinary fiberglass fire blankets, the most common household type, withstand temperatures from 260°C to 350°C. They are lightweight, reusable and well-suited for low-temperature fires, including kitchen open flames and burning paper or fabrics. However, they tend to crack and fail at temperatures above 370°C, leading to potential fire re-ignition.
For high-temperature fires, silicone-coated fiberglass fire blankets are the optimal choice. With a maximum heat resistance of 1100°C, they retain flexibility and airtightness under extreme heat. The silicone coating prevents skin irritation from fiberglass fibers and enhances air isolation, perfectly tackling kitchen oil fires and small electrical fires. For ultra-high-temperature industrial scenarios such as welding and smelting, aramid fiber fire blankets are indispensable. Featuring ultra-high melting points and outstanding tear resistance, they can withstand sustained intense heat that ordinary blankets cannot endure.
Proper usage is equally important as correct selection. Once a fire occurs, quickly unfold the blanket and wrap its edges around hands for heat insulation. Then cover the entire flame from near to far, sealing all edges tightly to block oxygen. Never hastily lift the blanket to check the fire. Wait at least 10 minutes for ordinary fires and 30 minutes for high-temperature oil fires until full cooling. If the fire spreads out of control, evacuate immediately and call for professional rescue.
In short, temperature matching is the key to effective fire blanket application. Reasonably matching blanket materials to fire temperatures and mastering standard usage turns this simple tool into a dependable safeguard for personal and property safety in daily and industrial fire emergencies.
