Selection of Water Hoses Materials in Cold Regions

Our Russian client needs large-diameter water hoses for water supply to small hydropower stations. The required specifications are: diameters of 100mm, 150mm, 200mm, 300mm, and 400mm, with a working pressure of 1MPa. The operating temperature range at the client's location is from -40℃ to +20℃, so low-temperature resistance is mandatory.
Given the client’s limited budget, we recommend hoses constructed with polyester filament reinforcement + polyurethane (PU) lining. Alternative linings such as PVC or rubber are prone to embrittlement in low-temperature environments and are therefore not suitable.
Polyurethane (PU) linings are further categorized into two types:
  1. Polyester-based PU: Synthesized from polyester polyols, it has a long-term service temperature range of -20℃ to -30℃, which cannot meet the client’s low-temperature requirement.
  1. Polyether-based PU: Capable of long-term use at -40℃ to -50℃, it perfectly matches the client’s operating conditions.
There is also a third option, TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane), which offers superior low-temperature resistance but comes at a higher cost.
Based on the client’s budget constraints and technical requirements, polyether-based PU is our recommended solution.
